IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) 2023 Explained

Hey there, welcome to my blog! Today I want to talk to you about the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report (AR6), which is a comprehensive and authoritative assessment of the state of knowledge of climate change, its widespread impacts and risks, and climate change mitigation and adaptation. In this post, I will give you a brief overview of the main findings of this report, based on its summary for policymakers (SPM).

The SPM is divided into three parts: SPM.A Current Status and Trends, SPM.B Future Climate Change, Risks, and Long-Term Responses, and SPM.C Responses in the Near Term. Here are some of the key messages from each part:

- SPM.A Current Status and Trends: This part describes how human activities have caused unprecedented changes in the Earth's climate system, such as rising global surface temperature, melting ice sheets and glaciers, sea level rise, ocean acidification and deoxygenation, and changes in precipitation patterns and extreme events. It also highlights how these changes have affected natural and human systems, such as ecosystems and biodiversity, food security, water resources, health, human security and livelihoods. It also assesses the role of natural variability and human influence in observed changes, using multiple lines of evidence and methods.

- SPM.B Future Climate Change, Risks, and Long-Term Responses: This part projects how the climate system will evolve under different scenarios of greenhouse gas emissions and other drivers of climate change, such as land use change and aerosols. It also evaluates the risks and impacts of future climate change on natural and human systems, considering different levels of global warming (e.g., 1.5°C, 2°C, 4°C) and different regions and sectors. It also explores the long-term responses of the climate system to different levels of cumulative carbon dioxide emissions, such as global surface temperature stabilization, carbon dioxide removal, overshoot and reversal scenarios.

- SPM.C Responses in the Near Term: This part assesses the options and pathways for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate change in the near term (up to 2050). It also examines the synergies and trade-offs between mitigation and adaptation actions, as well as their co-benefits and adverse side-effects for sustainable development. It also identifies the enabling conditions and barriers for implementing effective and equitable responses to climate change, such as governance, finance, technology, behavior change, innovation and cooperation.

The report recognizes that climate change is a complex and interrelated challenge that requires a holistic and integrated approach that considers the interdependence of climate, ecosystems and biodiversity, and human societies; the value of diverse forms of knowledge; and the close linkages between climate change adaptation, mitigation, ecosystem health, human well-being and sustainable development. It also reflects the increasing diversity of actors involved in climate action, such as governments at all levels, civil society organizations, businesses, indigenous peoples and local communities.

I hope this post has given you a glimpse of what the IPCC AR6 report is about and why it is so important for informing policy decisions and actions on climate change. If you want to learn more about the report and its findings, you can access it online at https://www.ipcc.ch/report/ar6/syr/.
